What is Skills for Work?

AKG Learning is proud to deliver Skills for Work – Buckinghamshire, a fully funded adult skills programme designed to help residents gain the knowledge, skills and recognised qualifications needed to secure employment, progress in business and management careers, or start and grow their own business.

Working in partnership with employers, community organisations, referral partners, and local stakeholders, we are helping to address skills needs across Buckinghamshire by creating opportunities for people to develop in-demand skills while supporting employers to build a skilled and sustainable workforce.

Skills for Work – Buckinghamshire offers employers access to flexible, fully funded training that helps develop existing employees, close skills gaps, and support career progression.

Eligibility

Employed Learners (funded through Free Courses for Jobs)

  • Age 19+ as of 31st August 2026
  • Right to Live and Work in UK
  • Ordinarily Resident in Buckinghamshire (excluding Milton Keynes)
  • Employed and earning less than £31,470 per annum

Learning for Individuals

If you’re looking to build new skills, return to work, change career, gain a recognised vocational qualification, or explore self-employment, Skills for Work – Buckinghamshire offers a range of programmes designed to help you achieve your goals.

You’ll learn in a supportive environment with experienced vocational tutors, gain practical knowledge, and develop the confidence you need to succeed in the workplace or take your next steps towards self-employment.

Our programmes are suitable for adults at different stages of their journey, whether you’re taking your first steps into employment, looking to progress within your chosen sector, or developing the skills to start and grow your own business.

Unemployed Learners (funded through Adult Skills Fund)

  • Age 19+ as of 31st August 2026
  • Right to Live and Work in UK
  • Ordinarily Resident in Buckinghamshire (excluding Milton Keynes)
  • Not currently in Employment, Education or Training

Course duration: 3 weeks
Delivery Method: Tutor-led Online Classroom Sessions
Delivery Schedule: 15 days, 9.30am–2.30pm

Who it’s for:

This programme provides learners with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in customer-facing, administration and business support roles.

Course Summary:

Learners develop an understanding of how organisations operate, including business structures, workplace communication, office procedures and problem solving. The programme also covers customer service, front office processes, information management, record keeping and administrative tasks.

Alongside workplace skills, learners develop their employability by creating professional CVs and cover letters, improving job search techniques and building confidence in completing applications. This qualification provides a strong foundation for entering the workplace or progressing within business support roles.

Creating a Business Start-up

Course duration: 3 Months
Delivery Method: Tutor-led Online Classroom Sessions
Delivery Schedule: 12 weekly sessions, 9.30am–2.30pm

Who it’s for:

This programme is designed for individuals interested in starting their own business and developing the knowledge and skills needed to take their first steps into self-employment.

Course Summary:

Learners explore the key stages of developing a business idea, including market research, branding, marketing, business planning and understanding different business models. The programme also covers the legal and financial considerations of running a business, including taxation, legislation, managing customers and suppliers, and using financial information to support decision-making.

By the end of the programme, learners will have developed the skills and confidence to create a viable business proposal and understand the practical steps involved in starting and running a business. The qualification also supports progression into further study, enterprise opportunities or business and management roles.

Management Skills and Knowledge

Course duration: 6 months
Delivery Method: Tutor-led Online Classroom Sessions
Delivery Schedule: 6 sessions, delivered once per month (4 hours per session)

Who it’s for:

This programme is designed for individuals looking to develop their leadership and management skills, whether they are already working in a supervisory role or preparing to progress into management.

Course Summary:

Learners develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to lead teams, manage workplace activities and contribute to organisational success. The programme covers communication, relationship building, leading people, coaching, managing performance, conflict management, project management, operational management, decision making and financial awareness.

The qualification supports learners to build confidence as managers, improve workplace performance and develop the skills needed to progress into team leader, supervisor or management roles across a range of sectors.
