Why Inclusive Employment Matters: A New Approach to Workforce Access

By April 21, 2026No Comments

Employment is about more than securing a job. It is about connection, identity, dignity, independence and a sense of belonging. For many people, accessing meaningful work is still a challenge, not because they lack skill or motivation, but because traditional recruitment systems were never designed with everyone in mind.

Across the UK, thousands of people face barriers to employment. These can relate to health, confidence, caring responsibilities, language, education, or simply the circumstances of life. According to the Office for National Statistics, economic inactivity remains significantly influenced by long-term sickness and caring responsibilities, highlighting the scale of these challenges. At the same time, many employers are struggling with skills shortages and finding it difficult to build the teams they need.

Inclusive employment sits at the point where these two realities meet. It recognises something simple but often overlooked: talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not always reach it.

At AKG Employment, we believe access to work should not depend on past circumstances, social advantage, or having the “right” kind of CV. Employment pathways should reflect the diversity of people’s strengths, experiences and potential, as well as the real needs of local employers.

Rethinking How We Understand Potential

Traditional recruitment processes tend to prioritise speed, efficiency and familiarity. While this works for some, it can quietly exclude people who need a different kind of support to show what they are capable of. This might be someone returning to work after caring for family, or someone managing a long-term health condition.

Research from the Work Foundation highlights that people with fluctuating or long-term conditions are more likely to be under-employed or excluded from the labour market, even when they have strong skills and a clear desire to work. At the same time, employers often report challenges in filling roles and finding candidates with the right mindset and interpersonal strengths. Insights from the CIPD also show ongoing recruitment challenges linked to skills gaps and candidate expectations.

When recruitment is based purely on work history, interview performance or formal qualifications, it becomes easy to overlook people who could succeed with the right support in place.

Inclusive employment encourages a shift in thinking. Instead of asking whether someone fits the system, it asks what that person could bring, and what support would allow them to succeed.

Taking this approach gives people the space to rebuild confidence, reconnect with their identity as workers, and move forward at a pace that works for them.

A Person-Centred Model of Support

Inclusive employment works best when support is consistent, human and tailored to the individual. People returning to work after time away may need time to rebuild routine, confidence or communication skills. Some benefit from workplace adjustments or a phased start. Others need practical guidance and someone who genuinely understands their situation. Guidance from organisations such as ACAS highlights the importance of reasonable adjustments and supportive workplace practices in enabling people to succeed at work.

At AKG Employment, we work closely with individuals to understand what will help them move forward. Support can include:

  • Building confidence and self-belief
  • CV and application guidance
  • Interview preparation
  • Workplace communication skills
  • Training and progression pathways

What matters most is that support is shaped around the person, not just the job outcome. Progress is something we build together, in a way that respects each individual’s starting point and strengths.

Why Inclusive Employment Matters to Employers

Inclusive employment is not only about supporting individuals, it also creates stronger organisations.

Employers who take a more inclusive approach to recruitment often benefit from a broader and more capable talent pool. They are more likely to see improved staff retention, stronger team culture, and a workforce that better reflects the communities they serve.

Research from the CIPD shows that organisations investing in inclusive recruitment and support see positive outcomes across morale, productivity and overall team stability. Wider industry research, including studies by McKinsey & Company, has also linked diverse and inclusive teams with stronger business performance and decision-making.

People who have experienced barriers to employment often bring resilience, adaptability and perspective. These are qualities that cannot easily be taught, but they can make a lasting difference within a team.

Inclusive Recruitment in Practice

This approach is already being put into action through our work with employers. In the video above, employer partner Kindred shares their experience of taking a more inclusive approach to recruitment.

Rather than focusing only on traditional hiring criteria, the conversation reflects the value of recognising potential, offering the right support, and creating opportunities for people who may otherwise be overlooked.

It also highlights something we see consistently in our work. When employers are open to adapting their approach, whether that is through more flexible recruitment processes or closer collaboration with support providers, they are often able to access talent they would not have reached through standard routes.

A Shared Commitment to Opportunity

For inclusive employment to be effective, it needs to be built on partnership. This includes job-seekers, employers, local systems and providers who understand the realities of both life and work.

AKG Employment is here to support that connection. We work with individuals to build confidence and readiness, and with employers to create environments where people can succeed.

Everyone should have the opportunity to work, contribute and grow. Inclusive employment is how we move closer to making that a reality.
