When you hear the word apprenticeship, what comes to mind? For many, it’s still the old-fashioned image of a teenager in a hard hat learning a trade. But times have changed. In today’s job market, apprenticeships have evolved into powerful pathways for people of all ages to upskill, retrain, and progress their careers — especially in the world of business services.
Whether you’re looking to break into HR, finance, project management, or marketing, there’s likely a business services apprenticeship out there that fits the bill.
But let’s bust some myths first…
Myth #1: Apprenticeships are only for trades.
Not anymore. Modern apprenticeships now span every sector, from digital marketing to compliance to business analysis. In fact, business services is one of the fastest-growing areas for apprenticeship opportunities across the UK. If you’re aiming to build skills in strategy, client service, or operations, this route can get you there.
Myth #2: Apprenticeships are for school leavers with no other options.
Absolutely not. While many young people do start apprenticeships after school, they’re not the only ones who benefit. Apprenticeships are open to anyone over 16, and that includes people already in work. Whether you’re returning from a career break or looking to take on more responsibility, an apprenticeship can be the ideal upskilling route — without having to hit pause on your job.
Myth #3: You don’t gain “proper” qualifications.
Far from it. Business services apprenticeships often come with industry-recognised qualifications — think AAT (for accountancy), CIPD (for HR), or CMI (for management). You can study at Levels 2 to 7, with some programmes even leading to the equivalent of a Master’s degree. That’s serious career development, backed by recognised credentials.
Myth #4: Apprentices just do admin and make tea.
Those days are gone. Today’s apprentices take on meaningful, hands-on roles within real teams. From day one, you’ll be learning by doing — managing projects, supporting clients, analysing data, and solving real business challenges. It’s a far cry from filing papers in the corner.
Myth #5: It won’t help your long-term earning potential.
Not true. Apprentices finish their training with no student debt, real-world experience, and in many cases, a full-time job offer. Many go on to higher-level roles faster than their university-only peers, and businesses increasingly see apprenticeships as key talent pipelines for leadership roles.
Myth #6: There’s no career progression.
In fact, apprenticeships are designed with progression in mind. You can start at an intermediate level and work your way up to a degree-level programme. Some apprentices even move straight into management roles. Employers often invest heavily in their apprentices because they see them as long-term assets.
Myth #7: Employers don’t take them seriously.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. From SMEs to global giants like PwC, BT, the NHS, and Barclays, apprenticeships are now central to workforce strategy. These organisations recognise the value of nurturing talent from the ground up — and they invest accordingly.
So, why choose an apprenticeship to upskill?
- You’ll gain skills that are immediately applicable in the workplace.
- You’ll earn while you learn — no student debt here.
- You’ll build a professional network from day one.
- You’ll work towards respected qualifications.
- You’ll stand out in a competitive job market.
