‘Putting people first: Jocelyn Garner on Connect to Work Buckinghamshire

When Jocelyn Garner joined Intuitive Thinking Skills, part of AKG Group, earlier this year, she brought with her more than 15 years of experience supporting people into sustainable employment.

Having worked across government-funded employment programmes, housing associations and homelessness services, Jocelyn has dedicated her career to helping people overcome barriers to work. Today, as Service Manager for Connect to Work Buckinghamshire, she leads a growing team delivering one of the county’s newest employment support services.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping people realise what’s possible,” says Jocelyn. “Employment can change someone’s confidence, independence and overall wellbeing, so being part of that journey is incredibly rewarding.”

Since launching in April 2026, the Buckinghamshire team has grown steadily and will continue expanding over the next 18 months as demand for the service increases.

Unlike traditional employment programmes, Connect to Work follows the Supported Employment model. Rather than expecting people to become ‘work ready’ before looking for employment, the team helps participants find the right role first, before providing tailored support to help them succeed and remain in work.

“We spend time really getting to know each person,” explains Jocelyn. “We build a detailed vocational profile over several conversations with the individual, so we understand their aspirations, strengths and support needs. That means we’re matching people to opportunities where they can genuinely thrive.”

The programme also works closely with employers, helping organisations recruit confidently while creating more inclusive workplaces for people living with health conditions or disabilities.

For Jocelyn, however, the biggest rewards often come from the smallest moments.

“People often think success is getting a job, but sometimes success is simply believing you can apply for one.”

She recalls one participant whose anxiety had become so overwhelming they couldn’t submit an online application without becoming distressed.

“With support from their Employment Specialist, they gradually built the confidence to take that first step. Watching someone achieve something they genuinely didn’t think was possible is what makes this role so special.”

As the service continues to grow across Buckinghamshire, Jocelyn is proud to be leading a team committed to putting people first.

“When you understand the individual and support them properly, everybody benefits – the participant, the employer and ultimately the whole community.”

Empowering communities across the UK through personalised support in health, learning, mindset change, and pathways to meaningful employment.
