For this Connect to Work participant, securing meaningful employment was about more than finding a job. It was about rebuilding confidence, putting their qualifications and experience to use, and taking the next step towards a future they had worked hard to create.
Having recently graduated from university, the participant had already overcome a challenging period in their life, including the loss of a parent. After relocating several years ago, they had worked hard to establish themselves and build a career. Despite their qualifications, skills and determination, they had struggled to secure sustainable employment.
The participant had gained valuable experience through temporary and zero-hours contracts but had been unable to secure the permanent, full-time position they were looking for. Repeated applications without success had understandably affected their confidence and left them questioning why their efforts were not translating into opportunities.
It was at a local employment support event that the participant was introduced to the programme. It quickly became clear that a lack of ability was not the issue. They already possessed many of the skills, experience and personal qualities employers were looking for. Instead, the focus was on helping them communicate those strengths more effectively.
The support provided was intentionally light-touch, focusing on practical advice around tailoring their CV, using employer-focused language, clearly communicating their skills and achievements, and approaching interviews as an opportunity to demonstrate their suitability for a role.
The participant quickly put the advice into practice. They consciously changed the way they communicated with potential employers, focusing more on their experience, strengths and suitability for the opportunities they were pursuing. As a result, they reported feeling noticeably more confident when discussing their career ambitions.
By their third meeting, the participant had attended an interview for a role that brought together two areas of expertise and career interests they were particularly passionate about. They felt positive about the experience and confident that they had successfully demonstrated their abilities using the techniques discussed during their previous meetings.
The following day, they received the news they had been hoping for: they had been offered the position.
The achievement was a testament to the participant’s resilience, determination and willingness to learn. While the support provided helped them make small but meaningful changes to how they presented themselves, it was their commitment to acting on that advice, combined with their existing skills, qualifications and experience, that ultimately secured the opportunity.
Their new role provides the opportunity to use their education and experience in a career aligned with their ambitions, while giving them a stronger foundation for the future they have worked so hard to build.
This truly demonstrates how the right support at the right time can help someone recognise their own potential, rebuild their confidence and turn that potential into opportunity.
